Camera + Lots of Time + Sister Missionaries = THIS

Sister Halladay, Sister Orawiec, Sister Sowards

December 31st 2008

Hey!
So I got transfered to Harrisonburg VA. It's a huge area! We cover 2 wards and also part of West Virginia. It's pretty crazy! My new companion is Sister Hopoate. She's a good missionary and we're hoping for lots of success this transfer. We did get transfered on Christmas day which was kinda a bummer because we drove and packed all day, but oh well. The work will keep pressing forward. I'm in the horse and buggy Mennonite territory which is pretty funny. The Mennonite people are really nice and it's fun watching them go on their horse and buggies. Not something I'm use to seeing everyday. We just set a girl named Megan Hedrick for baptism for January 24, 2009 which is really exciting. There's a lot of Less Actives to work with as well as a lot of members who love missionary work. They like to feed you out here as well so hopefully I don't get fat! I'll just have to run more I guess.
I've converted to a new snack! NUTTER-BUTTERS! OH MAN!! They are so good. So I pretty much eat Oranges, Nutterbutters and bagels unless a member feeds us. LOL It's so good though. Not the best diet but man it's good.
Other then that, not much is going on. Next week I get to go on exchanges with Sister Abbott. It's her last transfer then she's going home. I'm SO excited to be companions with her for 2 days. Out of all the sisters I've been dying to serve with her. So the Lord has blessed me! She's amazing and I'm planning on learning A LOT from her!
The mission is so great! I love every second of it. It's fun to meet all these new people and bring more happiness into their lives. I feel so blessed to be able to be a part in helping established God's kindgom here on earth. It's wonderful! I love it!
I'm sorry I don't have much more to write. My christmas wasn't bad. We had breakfast at a members home (The Marlowes) and I got to say my good-byes to a lot of people. So that was nice. It's was really good to talk to my family and see how they were doing. Time went by way to fast though! Until next week -Sister Orawiec

December 17th 2008

What a great week this has been! But of course every week is great. But what was so great about it is that we had THREE baptism!
12-11-08
We had the wonderful opportunity to attend Zone Conference and hear from our awesome mission President and the assistants to the President. They are wonderful men. And even better, there is a Elder out here named Elder Taylor (who is one of my zone leaders) and he is an amazing piano player and he played 2 musical numbers that really helped the spirit to be there. The weather was horrible though. It was raining and traffic was miserable! After the conference ended we had to TRY and leave right away because we had Jarvis Sinclairs baptism to get to by 5:30 and we were at least an hour away if not more because of the weather and traffic. SO our ride was a half our late and we missed the baptism! :( Very sad day for me. That was my first baptism that was actually an investigator that I began teaching. We made it for his water side confirmation and testimony though. But it was still really hard for me to get over the fact that I missed out. Jarvis has become really close to sister Glauser and I so it sucked not being able to see him enter into the first covenant he made with His Heavenly Father. But he understood...
12-13-08
This day was a great day as well. We had Vinnie's baptism at 2 and then had the opportunity to be in a parade! We were on TV and everything. It was great. There were a few missionaries there and we had the chance to be in the parade and pass out pass along cards and talk to A TON of people! It was SO much fun!!!! We all absolutely loved it. There was a girl in the ward where we were helping who has a cruch on Elder Taylor. So it was fun watching her flirt with him and him being uncomfortable... LOL good times. The baptism went really well and the spirit was strong. Vinnie was very emotional. She was confirmed the following Sunday.
12-14-08
We went to a members home for lunch and to help her decorate for Christmas! It was so much fun to decorate her tree and house for this wonderful holiday. We shared stories of family traditions and even better, stories about Christ. Her name is Sister Archibald and she teaching the semenary class out here. She's amazing! Very very knowledgable!
12-16-08
Then yesterday was Faustinos baptism! He was so excited! I loved seeing him! He even made hot tamalies for the snack afterwards! They were so good. I thought of Brandy while I ate them because she'd be loving life if she would've been able to have some. I know how much she loves them. But a really sad but amazing experience happened yesterday... So there's a guy named Steve Sheriff who is know at an eternal investigator because he's been investigating the church for years now. He's an older man that lives at home with his parents who are also VERY old. They have been married for 67 years. So his mom has been in the hospital and very sick the past few days. Sister Glauser and I stop by the hospital to see if Steve was there so we could invite him to the baptism because he really wanted to go. But he wasn't there. We visited with his dad for awhile and left to steve's house because his dad said that's where he was. So we get there and were talking to him for maybe 5 minutes and he gets a phone call from his dad... His mom had passed away as we were speaking... I couldn't believe it. We were just with her not even 10 minutes before hand. I was so sad for him and his Dad. His Dad was talking to us about how hard of a time he's having because he can't say good-bye to someone he's been with for almost 70 years.... I about cried. But we comforted Steve and went on our way. Told him to call us if he needed anything. So later on, we were at the baptism. And just as they were about getting ready to baptize Faustino, Steve walks into the room!!!! I couldn't believe it!! His mom JUST died but he came anyways! It was so amazing! My eyes teared up and I ran to greet him. He said he couldn't miss it! It was amazing! Good day!! no no no GREAT DAY!
12-17-08
And Last night was transfer call night. What an intense night! I tell you what. But everyone's prayers were answered and I'm staying in Yorktown baby! Man was I happy! I really wanted to stay. ESPECIALLY for Christmas because we have some awesome stuff planned and I wanted to be here to teach Pete most of all. He's so solid and is gonna get baptized... When we teach him of course. He's is DEFINATELY one of God's elect that He put in our path! It's so great! We have 22 new missionaries coming in to the mission. That is A LOT! The work is just moving along so great! I love it! I don't even know where this transfer went! It just flew by! Well that's about all for now. Thanks for all you all do! And for all your love and support. I dont' know if I'll be able to e-mail next week because our p-day falls on christmas eve and I don't think the library will be open. So MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all! I love you! Remember the CHurch Is TRUE!!

December 10th 2008

Ok so I haven't written a bulk e-mail in a little while so here it goes... We have 2 baptisms coming up this week. One on the 11th and one on the 13th. We're pretty excited about that! Jarvis Sinclair is, to the other s the one on the 11th and Vennie is on the 13th. They are both READY to enter into the covenant of baptism. Its been so great teaching them and seeing the difference the gospel makes in their lives. We had to pass our other baptism over, Faustino to the other sister because he lived out of our area :( BUT he's getting baptized on the 16th of this month as well. So that's great to hear! He referred us to his Mom that lives in Mexico so the Elders out there will hopefully be teaching her soon!
Its been pretty FREEZING here as well! It gets to about 31 and the humidity makes it seem so much colder! BLAH! So that's not a lot of fun to tract in.
Our zone is getting together today for P-Day and we're all going to play games at the church. Then tomorrow we have Zone Conference in Virginia Beach which is always a great thing to go to. Last Transfer it was AMAZING! So I'm pretty excited to go this time. I'll let ya know how that goes...
We are currently trying to teach a truck driver named Jesse (don't know if I've talked about him before) He's never in the area so we try to teach him over the phone. He's a great guy it seems like and has been investigating the church for quite some time now. We hope and pray that he'll contiue to be strong and continue on the right path.
hmmm... wow there really isn't much more I can think of. The area is great and I hope and PRAY that I don't get transfered. I'm not done serving in this area :) but of course I'll go where the lord wants me to go.
The church is true! don't ever forget that! Don't stop helping to build Zion and prepare the world for the 2nd coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
I love you and I'm doing great and loving my mission! It's been the best experience and I still have 15 months to go! I love it. Stay happy, safe and healthy :)

Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays Everyone!!

-Sister Jessica Orawiec

November 26th 2008

The work is going great! We had a random guy call us the other day, Jesse Domingas, who wanted to be baptized! He's been taught previously but wasn't ready for the commitment of baptism because he wanted to be sure he was ready to make the kind of commitment. He had the opportunity to go to temple square last week and watch every movie they played, went on every tour, went to the visitors center and pretty much did all they had for him to do. He said he had the most wonderful experience there and realized he was ready to be baptized and become a member of the church. So that was really exciting. Its not every day that you get a phone call from someone who is begging to get baptized. Usually its the other way around :)
We still have our 3 set for baptism as well but had to pass Faustino off to another set of sister missionaries because he's out of our boundaries. That was a bummer but at least he'll get baptized either way. A lot of people are really weirded out by the church right now because of stuff they see on the news... Not really sure what's going on but we explain that it isn't our church who's doing all those bad things. It's gotten really bad to the point where people just wont even give us the chance to speak and start yelling and mocking us... But I'm grateful to those who will listen. We're continuing to strive and get all the less active members active again and help out with the part member families. It's going great! People love having us in their homes. I love it.
For thanksgiving we'll be going to 2 members homes. One at 1 and one at 5... So we should be nice and fat by the end of the day. We're suppose to be getting out transfer calls on December 16th and be transfered the 18th... I really hope I don't get transfered but I have a feeling I will be. The timing is a bummer... Right before Christmas then going to an area where you don't know anyone... But I'll go where the Lord wants me to go and be happy about it!! He knows better than me.'
Other then that, not much more is going on. It's getting super cold here and people say that it's usually not this way till January and February so we're looking at a nice cold winter... Gets right to your bones... Well I love you and hope all is well back home. You're always in my prayers!
-Happy Thanksgiving!!!

At the Mission Home

Virginia!!

Finally in Virginia

The car ride full of boys to the Mission Home.

November 12th 2008

What a week! Things have been great as always! At fast Sunday, Vinnie (the lady set for baptism) got up and bore her testimony in Sacrament meeting! It was amazing. Members hardly get up there, let alone someone who isn't even a convert yet. She calls the sister missionaries her guardian angels. She's amazing.
I got a new companion. Sister Glauser. (Glowzer is how its pronounced) She's really great. She only has about 4 months left till she goes home. We set two others for baptism yesterday all with in a 2 hour period. Faustin and Jarvis. They both accepted! Faustino is set for December 12th and Jarvis December 6th. The work is going great! Pray for them! Satan is going to be working extra hard on them.
We tract a lot but try not to. I've come to find out that its a waist of time! Members need to become more involved. Elder Bednar counseled us on that. People are more receptive to those they already know. Not strangers. But we are also working really close to Less Actives and recent converts. Glauser and I went to the bishop and got a new list of Less Actives, unbaptized youth, and part member families. Right now we are striving to contact all of them and get their visiting and home teachers over there. We have a great ward with lots of potential. Our bishop is AMAZING!! He puts missionary work first and does everything in his power to get things done and "make" people do their part. I love it!
Today we are going to Williamsburg with a member Sister Henderson and vinnie to go and vist Sister Sowards and her new companion Zwang. It should be a lot of fun! Other then that, things are great! We have a really busy weekend ahead of us and hope to have a even busier week next week. We tracked into a lot of nice people 2 days ago and have a return appointment with one named Heather. She actually lives in our apartment complex. When we knocked on her door it was night time and freezing outside! So she invited us in for hot chocolate. She was so nice and very interested in our message. We'll see her again on Friday.
My studies are going great! I absolutely love having personal study EVERY morning. I wish it was longer, but I'll take what I can get. It is starting to get really cold here. The humidity goes straight to your bones. And its just going to get colder. It also gets dark around 5:30! That's so early. I don't care for tracting in the dark so we try to set up appointments at night. Well, I hope all is well at home! Thanks so much for your love and support and writing me! Mails the best :) Love you!

November 5th 2008

Well I received my first transfer call last night! The two companions are getting transfered and a sister that has been serving in NC will be my new companion. I'm staying in Yorktown! I'm pretty excited about that. Things here are still moving along. I love the area and the ward it great. We've been working really close with less active members who are becoming not so less active! It's great to see the changes they are making in their lives. We still have 1 baptism date set for Miss Vinnie! She's doing SO well! Reggie.... he's on a little time out right now... Said he's give us a call and we all know how that'll turn out. We'll keep praying for him and working hard. Today will be a busy day getting the sisters packed and ready to go off to their new areas. They both have mixed feelings about leaving but I"m sure they'll love it when they get there. Sister Sowards will be in my zone still so that's great news! Other then that, not too much is going on. We have a few more new investigators that we are teaching and am going to commit one to baptism tonight at the lesson we have with him. Jarves Sinclair. He's been to 2 baptisms and attened church several times.
I love you and hope all is well back home! Don't forget.....

October 29th 2008

Wow does time fly!
This week hasn't been too bad. We've been tracting a lot and trying to find new investigators. We have 2 people set for baptism still which is great! They are progressing and keeping their commitments so that's always a good sign. My trainer Sister Sowards has been gone on exchanges since Sunday so it's just been me and sister Halliday. We've been doing really good though. We have another new investigator that we tracted into. We're teaching a few employees from a restaurant called Cinco De Mayo and we tracted into the manager and will start teaching him soon also. It's starting to get really cold here and we tracted in the windy, rainy, cold weather Monday. That was a bummer but we found the manager guy (Jonathan) so it was all worth it.
We met with a few less actives also and got them to come to church on Sunday!! Yay for that. We're working with a couple (the Chandlers) and trying to get them active again also. They are really nice people and always like to have us over for hot chocolate.
Weird thing happened the other day... We had about 30 minutes till we had to be home so we go "by the waying" which is when we got to a store or gas station on just talk to people outside. Well we gave a guy named Matt a pass along card for a free DVD of the Lamb of God. He was in total awe that we randomly just gave it to him. He said he'd call the number then he got in his truck. Well we talked to more people for about 10 more minutes and as we were leaving I saw that he hadn't left the gas station yet and was just watching us. So we pulled out and he started following us! The other sisters weren't paying attention and I told them NOT to go home and just go to a grocery store. They were getting freaked out but I just told them to listen to me and just do it. So the guy ends up following us to the store and we go inside to "buy something." He parked by our car and just sat there and waited for us. I told the cashier to just watch us and if anything happens call someone. So we go out and I walk up to him and start talking to him and see if he needed us to do anything for him. Turns out he was really flattered that we'd just randomly just give him this card and teach him about Christ’s teaching... So now we're teaching him and he suppose to be coming to church this week. It was pretty cool... Scary at first, but cool.
There's a member of the bishopric who tries to avoid missionaries so he doesn't have to do the work. But I cornered him in sacrament last week and got him to meet with us LOL Don't mess with me :) But we have 4 referrals from them and I got them excited about the work. So that was pretty cool. Sister Sowards have been trying to meet with them for months and I finally got him to cave!! YES!
Until next time

October 22nd 2008

Another week has come and gone!! Man time is flying!!
Well, we have another baptism date set!! A previous investigator actually. She had met with the missionaries for years and had a baptism date set, but she backed out and the Elders lost contact with her for over a year. We found her in our area book and decided to give her a call. She didn't answer so we left a message. A few days later she called us back and wanted to have a "Bible study" with us. So we went to the appointment not really knowing what to teach about and just attend to her needs and questions. We ended up talking about Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon and testifying like crazy! The spirit was so strong and we committed her to be baptized and she said "absolutely! I'm ready!!" We were all teary eyed and we all knew she was ready. She's an older lady and she's so nice. So she's set for December 6th and Reggie is still on for the 5th. So they'll both receive the Holy Ghost on the 7th.
We're also working with a less active member named Marla McFarlane. She's such a great lady! She fed us lunch and we gave her a lesson on Prayer. Before we went and saw her I prayed for days to know what to teach her. Prayer kept coming to my mind so I taught her the importance of prayer and she said all that was said is exactly what she needed to hear. It was really great! She's making me a beanie for the winter so that's exciting! A pink on of course! With sparkles!
We are still tracting a lot lately. That's pretty fun sometimes. Some people are so mean but it makes good stories to tell. We asked a guy how his day was going and he said "It's going good and it'll be going even better once you girls hit the road and get off my property." Yeah he wasn't very nice. We had 5 or 6 doors in a row act like that. But we just smile and thank them for coming to the door and keep pushing forward. It's good times! We'll find those who God has prepared to hear the gospel. It just takes time. Sister Halliday takes what they say to heart and she'll cry sometimes. But we just have to keep moving forward and always remember that at least we're trying and doing all we can to spread the gospel. They'll remember us in the future and hopefully be ready at a later time.
Always try to help spread the gospel. You don't have to be a missionary to do that. Let people know of the happiness you have in your life because of the gospel and try to bless theirs with your knowledge and testimony! We're commanded to do so :)
-Sister Orawiec

REMEMBER: The Church Is True!

October 15th 2008

We had an appointment with a guy we met tracting last night and taught him the first lesson. We sisters thought it was going a little rough as we were teaching him but I guess he got a lot out of it and felt the spirit so strong. We have a baptismal date set for him on Dec 5th!! Can you believe that?! Just one lesson taught and he's ready to go. It was really amazing! We've not had the best of luck these past few weeks. It's been a struggle finding and keeping investigators. We tract a lot but could never seem to find those who were searching.

The ward members are great here and like to have us over for dinner and have lessons. We're trying to get them more involved with missionary work which helps us out a lot if they talk to their friends, family, or people they work with who are not members or less active. So if you ever have anyone you can talk to, pray for the courage and God's help and go talk to them. You'd be surprised what the Lord can do for you and how he directs your words. You just have to get over that fear of talking about the gospel to someone. If you really sit back and think about it, what's there to be scared of? You have something so precious in your life that brings you happiness and peace!! Why would you not want your brothers and sisters to have that too? We are COMMANDED by God to "preach his gospel to all the nations of the world." Not just missionaries but members have that responsibility too. I really regret not putting for the effort to spread the GOOD WORD! Never again will I make that mistake. We sisters talk to EVERYONE we see.

I look at things like this.... It can get discouraging if you're are working your hardest, have the faith and desire, and doing all you can to invite others to come unto Christ but no one will listen to you... Door after door slammed in your face, person after person, arguing with you and mocking you for your beliefs. But at least I'm trying. And who knows? Maybe someday another set of missionaries will knock on their door and remember how we were there some time ago. And let those missionaries come into their home and teach them and baptize them. Even if I'm just planting that seed, that's good enough for me and that may be all God needs me to do right now... And if that's what God needed then that's what I'm going to do.

I want you to know how much I love this gospel! My testimony has grown so much while out here serving the Lord. We 3 Sisters are the ONLY missionaries covering the entire city of Yorktown. It is our duty and responsibility to teach all we can. Think about it... We were specifically called and set apart to bring Yorktown unto Christ. 3 Sisters against... well A LOT of people. Little overwhelming but I love it!! I'm so blessed to have this calling. To be a missionary in these last days. Calling those unto repentance who have not yet heard or accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ. HOW GREAT IS MY CALLING?! Pray for us lots! We need all the help we can get :)
